Web Hosting

Practically speaking, your Web Address is your Internet identity and your online brand. Your customers will remember this name and use it to find your Web site, your products or your services. And since no two parties can ever hold the exact Web Address simultaneously, your Internet identity is totally unique.

Technically, a Web Address is an addressing construct used for identifying and locating computers on the Internet. While computers use Internet Protocol (IP) numbers to locate each other on the Internet, people find them hard to remember. Therefore, Web Addresses were developed to permit the use of easily remembered words and phrases to identify Internet addresses.

For example, the Web Address yourcompany.com represents the The Web Pro's Web site. When you type yourcompany.com into a Web browser or send e-mail to someone at yourcompany.com, the Domain Name System (DNS) translates yourcompany.com into the IP numbers used by the Internet and connects you to TWRI.

What is Web hosting?

In order to establish your online identity with a Web site, you'll need the name and number of at least two computers (known as hosts or name servers), so your customers can find you on the Internet. You may have these special computers in your organization, or you may need to arrange for name service with an Internet Service Provider or Web hosting company. TWRI provides hosting plans starting at $9.95 per month (£9.95 in UK).

How much will my hosting provider charge me to transfer my Web address (domain name) to use with my new Web site?

Most hosting providers do not charge to transfer a Web address. Please note that TWRI does not charge for this transfer at all; any transfer charges that you may incur would come directly from your current hosting provider.

I can't find a Web address that works for my Web site; lots of the names I've tried are taken. I don't have a Web address to transfer either. What should I do?

Your Web site must have a Web address in order to be found on the Internet. And you have to have a Web address to subscribe to our monthly plans. But if you want to get a Web site now (and register your Web address later) you can have TWRI build your site, then download the site to your computer. Just remember that your Web site won't be on the Internet until you have registered your Web address. Your next step will be to arrange for the Web site to be hosted by the provider of your choice. Many hosting providers offer "third level domain names" (e.g. www.yourcompany.abccompany.com). If you have dial up access to the Internet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) you may already have space for a Web site with a third level domain name. Check with your existing provider for details.
